Four of the world’s ten best universities are in the UK. As well as seats of learning, many are innovation hubs. In the past, innovation tended to go uncommercialised but this is changing. The University of Cambridge, for example, has spun out 15 companies that are today valued at more than $1 billion. Two are now worth more than $10 billion.
How could investors access the university spinout sector?
Possibly the easiest option for experienced private investors is to consider an EIS fund that focuses on the university spinout sector. The fund structure provides diversification across all the spinout companies in the portfolio.
That is the specialist area of Parkwalk Advisors, which claims to be the UK's most active investor in university spinouts. In addition to its popular Parkwalk Opportunities Fund EIS, it also runs funds in conjunction with some of the UK's leading universities. Two such funds are currently open: Imperial College Innovation Fund EIS and University of Cambridge Enterprise Fund EIS. Wealth Club is the only non-advised broker to offer them. For both funds, Wealth Club investors can benefit from an exclusive allocation.
Imperial College Innovation Fund EIS – £500k exclusive allocation
Imperial College is one of the most renowned universities in the world and a global leader in research.
In 1986, the university launched its own dedicated technology transfer office to provide investment support for its academic talent. Since then, hundreds of startups have been formed at Imperial College (more than 200 in the last five years alone) and attracted close to £800 million in external capital and supported the creation of over 1,200 new jobs.
Imperial College is now partnering with spinout-specialist Parkwalk Advisors to launch its first dedicated EIS fund. An exclusive allocation of £500k has been reserved for Wealth Club investors. Wealth Club is the only non-advised broker to offer this.
University of Cambridge Enterprise Fund EIS – £250k exclusive allocation
Launched in 2012, the University of Cambridge Enterprise funds offer Cambridge alumni and investors opportunities to invest in early-stage science and technology companies as they spin out of Cambridge University, one of the top four universities in the world.
This is the seventh University of Cambridge Enterprise EIS fund. It is a partnership between Parkwalk Advisors and Cambridge Enterprise, the commercialisation arm of the University of Cambridge.
There is limited capacity. An exclusive allocation of £250k has been reserved for Wealth Club investors. Wealth Club is the only non-advised broker to offer this.
